High Barn Holiday Cottages News & Offers
We have probably been luckier than most other areas of the UK so far this summer as we have not suffered floods and we have glimpsed the sun on several occasions. Today, The Driffield Show, our local agricultural highlight of the year, went ahead with only a few boggy places, plus a good show of wellington boots and umbrellas being held in reserve. It was warm, breezy and very summery! Our three baby owls are still in the nest and very visible on the webcam whenever we look. They have all managed to fly from the nest, but return to roost there each day and still appear to be relying on the parent birds to supply them with food. Their fluffy appearance has disappeared and they are now sleek and beautiful. We spoke to a member of The Wolds Barn Owl Society today and he suggested the pair may have a second brood if weather conditions improve. Last year we scattered a wild flower seed mixture in the meadow behind the barn. It didn't do very much, so the area was mowed and left as grass. However, this year many of the wild flowers have taken off and the resulting meadow is very pretty and will be a great attraction to butterflies, bees and moths. I keep adding to the mix with seed I have collected - hopefully we'll have a really diverse collection of native species there. High Barn Cottages have been selected as finalists in The White Rose Tourism Awards in the Best Self- Catering category. This is very exciting news - we have been finalists four times before with our cottages at Field House. We know the competition is strong, so it's great to be selected - the results will be announced in the Autumn. Last year at this time we were still putting the finishing touches to the cottages at High Barn. This July and August our bookings are strong and we are delighted that many visitors are becoming returners after such a short time in operation Three cottages have already been taken over the Christmas period and we look forward to a busy end to the 2012 season. |
