Holidays in East Yorkshire
Staying in one of our holiday cottages at High Barn, on the East Yorkshire coast, allows you to discover a relatively unknown part of this beautiful county.
We offer a brilliant base from which to explore the nearby Yorkshire Wolds, the spectacular area of coast around Flamborough Head, Bridlington's long sandy beaches, The North Yorkshire Moors, York, Whitby, Beverley, Scarborough and the often overlooked city of Hull, Capital of Culture 2017.
Here are just some local highlights:
Bridlington's historic Old Town has antique shops, art galleries, a family butcher and artisan baker, plus the magnificent Priory Church and Baylegate Museum. The north and south beaches of the town are all within three miles of High Barn. Bridlington has an attractive fishing harbour, as well as restaurants, entertainments, two theatres, cafes, tea-rooms, pubs, cinemas and bowling. An indoor swimming pool is available just a few minutes walk from your cottage, along Jewison Lane and, the recently opened East Yorkshire Leisure Centre in Bridlington offers both swimming and fun pools, a climbing wall, multiple indoor sports facilities and a lovely cafe with expansive sea views .
Explore the areas of The Yorkshire Wolds painted by David Hockney, one of the world' most famous living artists, a resident in Bridlington for many years.
Just three miles from the cottages, Flamborough Head offers a Heritage Coast - North Landing, South Landing, Thornwick Bay, a sculpture trail, cliff walks, nature trails, sandy coves, rock pools, caves, boat trips, the lighthouse, and the lifeboat station. Good pub meals are available using fresh fish caught locally.
Sewerby Village, Park and Hall is approximately a mile and a half from High Barn and features formal and informal gardens, a local museum, putting, a 12 hole golf course, a children's zoo, playground, a land train and a cafe. In Sewerby village you will find a pub, fish and chip shop, two restaurants, a model village two churches and village hall which often has functions.
Only one mile from the cottages Is the famous RSPB Bempton Bird Reserve on Bempton Cliffs. This is one of the most visited bird watching sites in the country. Various events are held during the year and both wardens and volunteers are on hand to offer advice and information. Danes Dyke is a defensive Iron Age earthwork that cuts across the headland from north to south. Other birdwatching sites are: Filey Dams, Tophill Low, Spurn Point and Hornsea Mere.
Filey is 15 minutes by car, Scarborough 30 minutes. Whitby and York 60 minutes. All four are well worth a visit, as are Beverley and Hull.
Excellent local walking can be had from your doorstep. We provide local maps in each cottage. A stroll of less than a mile will take you to our local pub, and in the other direction , a farm shop and cafe.
The Hull New Theatre and Hull Truck Theatre are both excellent venues, as is The Stephen Joseph Theatre in Scarborough. Both Th Spa and The Spotlight Theatres in Bridlington put on a wide variety of entertainment.
We have 3 lovely golf courses within three miles of the cottages - a "Golf Pass" is a good value way of experiencing each of them.
